New Majors

We welcome you as a newly declared major in psychology and look forward to working with you!

After the deadline to declare a major at the beginning of the fall and spring terms, all newly declared psychology majors will be assigned a psychology advisor with whom they will meet for pre-registration appointments, academic issues, degree progress, experiential learning exploration, graduate school and career planning.  You will receive an introductory email from your assigned advisor approximately three weeks into the term with information on our new major orientation and survey.  At this point, you will also be added to the psychology major email distribution list, and you will receive weekly e-announcements from our office account,, every Friday.

Although all new majors must complete the new major orientation and survey before meeting with assigned advisors for pre-registration, anyone is welcome to schedule appointments with an advisor or to visit walk-in hours (Monday - Thursday, 10 am - 1 pm and Friday 9 am - noon).  Our office is located in room 3113 Sennott Square, and appointments can be made by calling 412-624-4540.  Please note that the availability of appointments may be limited during the 2-3 weeks prior to enrollment each term.

In addition, the Psychology Department offers a one-credit undergraduate seminar to newly declared psychology majors who have earned 85 credits or less.  PSY 0011 Introduction to the Field is an interactive course that emphasizes what you can do with a psychology degree and how to make the most of your time as an undergraduate student to advance along your chosen path.  To register for the course you must be a declared Psychology major and have less than 85 total credits.  We strongly encourage you to consider this opportunity to focus on academic and career planning while developing valuable professional skills and relationships!

Please note that all future communication from us will go to your Pitt e-mail address.  Once again, welcome to the Department of Psychology.  We look forward to meeting you soon!
