TITLE: More than Counting: An Intraindividual Variability Approach to Categorical Repeated Measures
ABSTRACT: Experience sampling studies often collect categorical repeated measures, including stressor types, activity types, and social partner types. Such variables are often analyzed as raw frequency counts, aggregate sums, or collapsed binary indicators. This presentation will illustrate how an intraindividual variability (IIV) framework can be used to interpret categorical repeated measures data. Specifically, I compute six IIV metrics using both numeric and nominal aspects of the data, using daily stressor type data as an illustrative example. I demonstrate how these novel metrics of IIV can be mapped to theory and related to age and interindividual differences in health and well-being. Findings highlight categorical IIV metrics may be used to examine dynamic process, study interindividual and age-related differences, and expand the variety of research questions that may be answered using categorical data.
